Origin: Natural blue sapphire (neelam) generally comes from Sri-Lanka (Ceylon), Burma and Kashmir.
Color: Blue sapphire of bright, pure blue hue is valuable. Dull and pale blue colored gemstones are cheap and not recommended for astrological purposes. Ideally, the sapphire’s color should be ‘true blue’ with a benchmark of ‘cornflower blue’ i.e. without any secondary tinge of purple or violet.
Clarity: Blue sapphire with no visible inclusions is extremely rare, so very expensive. Gemstones with dark and milky inclusions are much more affordable. Blue sapphire with less visible inclusions and good transparency is ideal for astrological purposes yet more affordable ones work well too.
Cut: A finely cut blue sapphire looks bright, colour illuminated and can cleverly conceal the inclusions. Highly faceted gemstones are expensive because of the stone wastage, labour and time incurred in the process.
Carat Weight: If the stone is of good quality, a 3 to 4 carat neelam will suit a wearer of any age and body weight and provide good results. If the stone is of low to medium quality, a 5 to 7 carat neelam is recommended. If one can afford it, a 5-10 carat good quality neelam is best.
There is no need to opt for a blue sapphire that is 1/10th of one’s body weight as is sometimes suggested.
Who can wear Blue Sapphire?
Since the blue sapphire is such a powerful astrological gemstone, its effects can be noticed almost instantly. It is therefore, advised to wear this gemstone after consulting an expert astrologer. In Indian astrology, Capricorn (makara), Aquarius (kumbha), Gemini (mithuna), Virgo (kanya) and Taurus (vrshabha) moon signs (rashi) and ascendants can experience the most benefits.
Western astrology recommends neelam for those of Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius star signs.
Benefits of Blue Sapphire
One of the key benefits of the blue sapphire is that it promotes mental clarity. This gemstone can help calm the mind for those who are stressed, frustrated, or overwhelmed.
When a person wears neelam, the power can be felt almost immediately.
The advantages of blue sapphire become apparent within a day. This gemstone improves the wearer’s luck, career direction, and, most crucially, opportunities. It is a stone that can remove obstacles and let energy flow freely throughout the body and mind.
Care and Cleaning:
• The stone regularly makes its appearance dull especially if you do not take care of it. To keep it beautiful and resplendence, you must take good care of your stone once a week.
• Use a soft tissue or a cloth and wipe the dust off the gemstone.
• Use some warm water rather than boiling hot water and blend some soft or warm cleanser in it.
• Use a soft toothbrush or jewellery brush to brush off the jewellery to exclude the blemishes perfectly.
Price Range: Blue sapphire price range from ₹5,000 (approx. £50) to ₹200,000 (approx. £2,000) per carat as per the quality parameters.
